How Do I Hire a Self-Placement Participant?

Steps to hire a self-placement Work & Travel participant.

Many employers hire students directly who are independently seeking job placements. Students typically contact employers via the internet, phone, or email to secure job offers. However, even if you offer a student a job, they must still obtain a J-1 Visa through a designated sponsor. InterExchange serves as the J-1 Visa sponsor for many Self-Placement participants each year.

As a host employer, you must comply with the regulations of the Summer Work Travel program, including all vetting requirements (22 CFR §62) and cultural exchange expectations.

Steps to Hire a Self-Placement Participant:

  1. Conduct an interview and discuss housing arrangements.
  2. Verify that the applicant is a full-time university student, between 18 and 28 years old, and suitable for the available position.
  3. Complete an online Host Employer Application and maintain all required documentation.
  4. Provide the student with a completed InterExchange Employer Offer and Agreement Form.
Instruct the student to contact the InterExchange International Cooperator in their home country for an interview.
