Useful Terms

Department of State (DoS) - Government entity that funds and regulates the J-1 visa program. Program regulations can be viewed here.

Exchange Visitor -  A participant on our program

Work & Travel -  Under the Work & Travel program, participants are allowed to work for up to 4 months in the U.S. as long as it does not conflict with their school schedule. After they finish the work portion of their program, participants may stay in the U.S. for a maximum of 30 days to travel before returning back to their home country.

J-1 Visa - The Exchange Visitor (J) non-immigrant visa category is for individuals approved to participate in work-and study-based exchange visitor programs.

Visa Sponsor - InterExchange is a J-1 visa sponsor designated by the Department of State. InterExchange is legally responsible for the participants while they are here. Only InterExchange or the U.S government has the authority to end a participant’s program.

International Cooperator - Before participants arrive, we work with a local agency in their home country for pre-arrival assistance. InterExchange vets these agencies annually. Participants cannot come on our program if we do not work with a local agency in their country.

Regional Manager - Staff members who oversee Job Placement employers and participants in a specific region. Regional Manager territories listed in the WT training drive.

Job Placement - Program where participants who find a job through our online matching system.

Self Placement - Program where participants who find a job on their own.

Employment Offer - Participants give this form to a potential host employer to fill out the details of the business and position. Participants then input this information directly into their Dashboard. Participants can get this form from their IC or our website.

Offer Submitted - Status that participants will see on their account dashboard. Job Offer Submitted for: Blank employer - position and wage InterExchange is reviewing this Job Offer and will email you when it has been confirmed. This means that InterExchange has received this job offer (JO) and has not been matched or reviewed.

Matching - This term refers to three different things:

1) A tab in App - This tab houses all pending and approved offers. A match refers to a participant placed with a host employer.  

2) A process for processing SP offers. Found in the Employment Offers section of the Matching Tab.

3) The pool of JP participants searching for a job. Here employers with Search On can look at participant profiles and place them On Review. Participants in this pool can also look at job listings and place themselves On Review.  

On Review - The host employer has not yet confirmed their employment offers. Employers receive weekly reminders to confirm any offers On Review. Self Placement offers automatically expire after 21 days (15 business days). Job Placement offers expire after 3 days.

Offered - The host employer has logged into their account and has confirmed their employment offers. These offers may still be pending due to one or all of these items; an incomplete Host Application, a phone interview with InterExchange, requested participant housing or some other information is missing.

Participant Offer Review - The employment offer and host employers application have been approved by InterExchange. These offers are pending the participants signature and approval, participants receive an auto email to review and sign their offer.

Hired - InterExchange has fully approved this employment offer. The host has been fully vetted and approved, and participants have signed their employment offer.
