Do I need a medical exam?

Who needs an Immigration Medical Exam and how to book one.

Only if it applies to you. You'll need an Immigration Medical Exam (IME) if you say on your application that you plan to work in childcare, healthcare or education. You may also need one if you've recently traveled to a country the Government of Canada lists as a health risk.

Book with a panel physician. The exam has to be done by a panel physician. Some US states only have one, and outside the US it varies a lot, so plan ahead. Depending on your health coverage, the exam may cost money, and that cost isn't part of your InterExchange program fee.

What to know

  • For your application, upload proof of your IME appointment. For most people that's a screenshot of the appointment confirmation or a printout of an email from the doctor's office.
  • The doctor's office sends your results straight to IRCC.
  • You don't need to bring any special forms. The clinic should have them.
  • You can do the exam before you apply or during the application. Putting it off may delay your decision.
  • Bring a copy of your medical exam documents when you cross the border.
